SEVEN

MICH WASN’T ABOVE changing her clothes to demonstrate that she was as much woman as she was a tow-truck driver, mechanic, chief cook and bottle washer, arm wrestler, and single mother of a teenager. She was a strong, confident, self-reliant woman with too much self-respect ever to use obvious, explicit sexual overtures to get what she wanted … unless it was absolutely necessary.

She had no idea what was keeping Noah at arm’s length from her, but she was certain it wasn’t what either of them wanted.

Not when the air seemed to sizzle when they came into each other’s company, deliberately or by accident. Not when they seemed to be constantly touching, by mishap or design. Not when she’d catch him watching her, dreamy-eyed, or when she couldn’t gather two thoughts around his constant presence in her mind.

No, tonight she was a powerful woman with hidden skills and secret talents. An exorcist, determined to drive out—or at least find out about—whatever it was that kept pulling at him, tugging him away from her.

She had a bevy of butterflies in her belly as she stood there, screwing up her courage to go get what she wanted. She couldn’t be wrong about him. She wouldn’t be able to feel the honesty and goodness in him if it wasn’t there, would she? Why would she ache for him if he had nothing with which to ease her pain?

She pushed the swinging doors of the Saloon wide open and stepped inside, meeting his gaze almost immediately.

He stood staring at her, stunned, as if she’d suddenly stabbed him without provocation. Her heart fluttered and skipped about in her chest, her breath came fast and shallow.

She had his attention now, by golly. Someone young and careless giggled inside her. The black silk of the dress skimmed against her naked skin, cool and smooth, arousing feminine charms she’d almost forgotten she had. She felt sexy. Magical.

A bar stool squeaked loudly in the silence that followed her entrance. Her gaze gravitated slowly to her father, who had turned to admire her openly, with his big arms crossed in satisfaction across his midsection. His eyes twinkled at her with pride and good humor, as they had most every day that she could remember. A slim smile and an encouraging wink from him was all it took to top off her tank of resolve.

She took aim at her target and started walking toward him. He could have been dead and nailed upright to the floor for all she knew, standing there motionless, staring, his expression one of dumb wonder. But the closer she got, the clearer she could see his chest rising and falling as he took deep bracing breaths, the difficulty he had swallowing, and a barely perceivable, very endearing, trembling of his hands.

In the back of her brain she registered Eric’s enthusiastic voice, but not what he was saying. His presence played on the lacy fringes of her mind, slowly working its way to the foreground, so that by the time she was to toe-to-toe with Noah, she’d come to a conclusion about it.
